There is a big debate over what could be gained, by leaving them in the country, rather than deporting, and whether the borders should be strengthened to stop them. However, regardless of where you stand, you have to adapt to the ever-growing Spanish speaking population. With this influx comes a new need for bilingual jobs. Jobs in bilingual areas come from the new Spanish speaking population. Every company needs employees who can communicate with their Spanish customers. Hence, there is a great need for those who can translate and speak both languages. All the companies looking to appeal to the Hispanic minority as well as to the rest of the English speaking country will have Spanish bilingual jobs available for those fluent in both languages.
As a bilingual the increase of bilingual sales jobs in the classifieds are to my benefit. I am in a good position because I am qualified for these positions. But still I face this controversial issue and dilemma. Why should we accommodate those who come to the US and do not learn English? I know Spanish because I moved to Peru for 2 years. I did not go there and expect Peruvians to speak English, and I did not expect to take a translator with me everywhere I went. I learned Spanish so that I could live there. It was as simple as that. People who move to another country need to learn the language of that country. This is America, and our language is ENGLISH! Not Spanish, or any mix of Spanish and English. I have never had a bilingual job, even though I am qualified to take one. I have always faced this moral dilemma and have chosen to speak English with all those I come across in this country. If they do not speak English, and they are not trying to learn, I cannot help. If they are trying to learn and do not have the language down yet, then I will give them a break and switch over to Spanish. I certainly do not want to encourage them by thinking they can just neglect their responsibility as an American and speak English like the rest of us.
Part of what divides a nation is the use of multiple languages. If there is a communication barrier between citizens of the same country, that country will be eventually divided. In history, every time a country was divided, it ultimately fell. We become an easy target for our enemies when divided amongst ourselves and many of those divisions begin with a language barrier. It is important that every US citizen learns to speak the national language.
There has been a talk about adding Spanish as a second national language. This is will only make the US a weaker country. You are asking every American to learn Spanish, instead of every immigrant to learn English. We are in majority, and it will be nearly impossible to enforce it. It is easier to enforce one national language. If you try to enforce a second language, you will be met with resistance from every state in the country. We were already here, so we have no obligation to change our ways. We created this country and made it what it is today. That is why people want to come here. If they want to come here, they need to learn our language.
Bilingual jobs are the results of corporations adapting the best they can to the new surge of immigrants. From a business perspective, they hope to make money from the immigrants, just as they are making from the current and previous US citizens. Hence, they are not really a part of this controversial debate. They might be opposed to immigration, but while they are opposed to it, they are not going to miss the chance of making money from these illegal immigrants. This mentality is responsible for so many bilingual jobs. There are other languages as well, but Spanish is by far the largest and fastest growing. If we do not do something about our borders soon, we will be overrun by illegal immigrants who do not pay taxes and this will drive our country's economy even further into the depths. We cannot keep carrying the extra weight brought on by illegal immigrants.
It is sad that it has come to this stage. We are all just trying to adapt to a situation we have no control over. We raise our voices and hope someone in Washington will solve the illegal immigration problem. I personally feel the best option would be to conquer Mexico and make it a US territory like Puerto Rico. Then we could start working to make Mexico a great nation and then the people there will not flee into our country.
